Cost calculator
What does an electric car cost compared with a petrol or diesel one?
Compare what an electric vehicle will cost you against a combustion one over the period you choose, whether you buy it, rent it or lease it. Adjust any figure to your own case.
Electric vehicle
Combustion vehicle
Maintenance, residual value and buy-out option are switched on for both vehicles at once, so the comparison is like for like.
An indicative estimate built only from the figures you enter. It excludes insurance and taxes, grants or subsidies, battery degradation, tolls and changes in energy and fuel prices over time. For renting and leasing, the terms of your quote are assumed to hold throughout the period. Residual value is your own assumption and it is the variable that moves the result most. This is not financial advice.
What an electric car really costs
The purchase price is only part of it. What a car costs over the years is the purchase or the fee, the energy it uses, maintenance and what it is worth when you sell it. This calculator adds it all up for an electric car and for a combustion one with the same kilometres and years, and tells you which comes out cheaper and by how much.
What it takes into account
- Buying, renting or leasing, with its price or monthly fee.
- Energy: each car’s consumption and the charging price at home or at work and at public chargers, mixed according to where you charge; for the combustion car, its consumption and the price per litre.
- Maintenance and residual value, if you turn them on (they are turned on for both cars at once so the comparison is fair).
To see how long a specific trip takes and what it costs, with your charging stops, use the route planner.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to own an electric car?
It depends mostly on the purchase price, how many kilometres you drive and where you charge. The calculator adds up the purchase (or the renting or leasing fee), energy and, if you turn them on, maintenance and residual value, and compares it with a combustion car using the same data.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
Consumption in kWh/100 km times the price per kWh. Charging at home on a night tariff usually costs much less than at a public fast charger; the calculator mixes both according to the share you charge at home or at work.
Is an electric car worth it compared with petrol or diesel?
It pays off when the savings in energy and maintenance cover the price difference over the years you keep the car. The calculator gives you the total cost of each option and the difference with your figures.
Does it work for renting and leasing?
Yes. You can compare buying, renting and leasing, with the monthly fee and, for leasing, the purchase option at the end.
